Family and Community Medicine Department
1-A Summary of the Department Since the Foundation:
The study started at the department since the college of medicine was founded in 1959.It was called the department of public health and preventive medicine. Foreign and Arab lecturers used to teach at the department, then, the qualified pioneer Iraqi lecturers ( Prof. Abdulilah Abdulmawjood and Dr. Nazar Yahya Nazhat ) joined the teaching staff at the department. The focus was on the medical and preventive aspects in the country in general, and in the city of Mosul in particular. The name of the department was changed from the department of family medicine into the department of Family and Community Medicine in 2013, and the family medicine subject was included in the fifth year students syllabus in 2018.

3-A Summary of Scientific Activities:
The department made a major leap in establishing postgraduate studies that started in 1987. The beginning was the initiating of MSc studies. In 1991, the diploma studies in medical professions were launched which became a high diploma in 2003. Then, the doctorate studies started in 1993, and the fellowship of Iraqi Board of Medical Specialties in family medicine was included in 2000. In 2011, high diploma studies in family medicine were launched to meet the urgent need of the ministry of health for specialized doctors in family medicine. Later, the studies in medical professions diploma were included in 2018.

The researches of these studies involved developing the public health care services in the country. They also covered the evaluation of the effects of the circumstances the country experienced in 1991 concerning malnutrition, spread of communicable diseases, environmental pollution, and other health issues. Moreover, the department played a vital role in launching field activities at the university of Mosul in 1988 which included all the specialties to communicate with the society. The main objective was to provide direct services to the people in the countryside and in the city itself. During the summer co-existence with the common committees, Ninava health association, and Ninava local government, the department provided the society with direct consultative services to improve health services in the city and in the country.
