What does sustainability mean?<\/h3>\n

Sustainability is an environmental term that describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans, sustainability is the ability to maintain our quality of life over the long term, which in turn depends on the conservation of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.<\/h3>\n

The term sustainability has become broad and can be applied to virtually every aspect of life on Earth, from the local to the global level and over various timescales. Wetlands and intact forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. Hidden biogeochemical cycles redistribute water, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon in the world’s living and nonliving systems, ensuring sustainable life for millions of years. However, as the human population has increased, natural ecosystems have declined, and the shift in the balance of natural cycles has had a negative impact on both humans and other living systems.<\/h3>\n

Typical Components of the Concept of Sustainability<\/h3>\n

There are several models and components of the concept of sustainability. These models include:<\/h3>\n

Institutional Sustainability:<\/h3>\n

This model pertains to government agencies. This model describes government institutions as organizational structures capable of fulfilling their role in providing community services that are appropriate for humankind, thereby achieving the true role of sustainability. This model also relates to non-governmental organizations and institutions that specialize in civil society, as they strive for community development while seeking to engage with the private sector.<\/h3>\n

Economic Sustainability:<\/h3>\n

This refers to the inclusion of policies that ensure the continuity of economic activities related to society and that lead to development in the agricultural and rural environment. This concept is economically applicable and culturally appropriate.<\/h3>\n

Environmental Sustainability:<\/h3>\n

This refers to the ability of the environment to continue functioning properly while minimizing environmental degradation. This concept of sustainability can be achieved when planning development to minimize damage to natural capital.<\/h3>\n
