The College of Arts at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis titled The Phonology of Coronal Sounds in Arabic with Reference to English on Thursday, February 6, 2025, in the Ibn Al-Athir Hall at the College of Arts. A number of faculty members and graduate students attended part of the discussion.<\/p>\n

The study, presented by the student (Waleed Ahmad Saleh Khalaf Al-Hayali), analyzed the specific behavior of coronal sounds in Modern Standard Arabic, as well as two Arabic dialects: Egyptian and Baghdad dialects, with reference to English as a complementary guide to this behavior in several academic fields, such as the distribution of these sounds in the linguistic inventory, the process of assimilation, and their emphatic and non-emphatic nature.<\/p>\n

The goal of this study is to uncover the specific behavior of this group of sounds and how they behave when compared to other sounds, such as labial and pharyngeal sounds, with reference to the English language.<\/p>\n
