\nThe College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a PhD dissertation entitled:
\n\u201cRivalries between Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti and His Contemporaries: An Analytical Study of Their Causes and Methods in Islamic Heritage,\u201d
\non Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Umm Al-Rabeein Hall in the college.
\nThe study, presented by the student (Marwan Sameer Kazim), addressed Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, who passed away in 911 AH. He is considered one of the most prominent scholars of the late ninth and early tenth centuries AH (15th and early 16th centuries CE). He left behind a vast scholarly legacy that included Qur\u2019anic exegesis, Hadith, jurisprudence, language, and literature, which earned him a distinguished status in the history of Islamic sciences. However, this high status was not free from controversy, as it led to many disagreements and scholarly debates with a number of scholars of his time, whether due to doctrinal or methodological differences.
\nRivalries among contemporary scholars were not exclusive to the Mamluk era; rather, they appeared since the earliest Islamic periods and only subsided under certain circumstances. Therefore, they were considered a natural phenomenon in scholarly circles, sometimes driven by competition and, at times, by envy.
\nThe study was divided into an introduction and three chapters. The introduction discussed the general characteristics of the era of Imam Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti. The first chapter focused on his life, while the second chapter examined the concepts of rivalries and contemporaries, along with their most important causes and methods. The third chapter addressed the rivalries between Imam al-Suyuti and his peers. In addition, appendices related to the dissertation\u2019s content were included, followed by a conclusion in which the researcher presented the most significant findings reached during the study.
