The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a PhD dissertation entitled \u201cA Study of the Contribution of Body Segment Momentum to Total Momentum and Its Relationship with Release Variables and Performance Achievement in the Shot Put\u201d on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in Umm Al-Rabeein Hall at the college.<\/p>\n
The dissertation, presented by Mr. Mohammed Jassim Mohammed, aimed to analyze the technical performance of the rotational technique in the shot put from a biomechanical perspective. The primary objective was to determine the contribution of each major body segment\u2014including the arms, legs, and trunk\u2014to the generation of total momentum during the different phases of the throw, and to identify which body segments have the strongest relationship with achieving greater throwing distances.<\/p>\n
The findings revealed that the body segments do not contribute equally during the throwing performance. The study concluded that arm momentum is the most influential factor in achieving superior performance, particularly during the final release phase. It also demonstrated that the explosive power of the legs is essential at the beginning of the movement to generate the required momentum, while the smooth sequential transfer of momentum from the legs to the trunk and then to the arms is the key to effective performance and higher achievement levels.<\/p>\n
The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Mohammed Khalil Mohammed and included Professor Dr. Waleed Ghanim Dhannoon, Professor Dr. Nihad Ayoub Qadir, Assistant Professor Dr. Faridoon Hassan Othman, Assistant Professor Dr. Zaid Abdul Sattar Hamed, and Professor Dr. Thaer Ghanim Hamdoon, who also served as the dissertation supervisor.<\/p>\n
