On Sunday, 17 August 2025, work continued on uncovering the Al-Khasfa mass grave in Nineveh, one of the most heinous crimes committed by ISIS against the people of the province. Preliminary estimates indicate that approximately 2,070 civilians and military personnel were unjustly killed and buried in this deep trench on 7 August 2015.<\/p>\n
Since 2017, scientific and field efforts have been ongoing to document and study the mass grave. Under the guidance of the President of the University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, experts from the College of Education for Humanities\u2014Prof. Dr. Fawaz Hamo Al-Neesh, Lecturer Asma Khalid Jirjis, and Lecturer Nazzal Ahmed Ibrahim\u2014contributed detailed academic analyses highlighting the humanitarian, social, and legal dimensions of the tragedy.<\/p>\n
The study recommended ensuring justice and promoting peace through the establishment of a memorial for the victims of Al-Khasfa and implementing measures to prevent the site from being misused in the future. These efforts were carried out in cooperation with state institutions, including the Nineveh Court of Appeal, the Governor of Nineveh, the Committee on Mass Graves, the General Directorate of Mass Graves in Iraq, and the specialized team for excavating the victims\u2019 remains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
