A Ph.D. dissertation was discussed in Department of Electrical Engineering \/ College of Engineering at University of Mosul, specialize in Electrical Engineering, entitled \u201cInvestigation of Intelligent Surfaces for Modern Communication Systems\u201d, submitted by (Abdulrhman Khalid Salih Alhafid), Supervised by Assist. Prof. Dr. Yessar Ezzaldeen Mohammed Ali as First Supervisor and Assist. Prof. Dr. Sedki Bakir Thanoon Younis as Second Supervisor, on Sunday, April 28, 2024.
\nThe thesis aimed to study the recent emerging technology \u201cReconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces\u201d (RIS), which allows to control the behavior of the signal propagation by coating environmental objects, like walls and buildings, with RISs. Also, to study how to exploit this technology to improve the performance of wireless communications and to overcome the NLoS problem. As well as to improve localization performance of the user equipment.
\nThe thesis discussed the evaluation of localization performance where a single transmitter equipped with a single antenna infers the position of a single antenna UE in RIS-assisted communications scenarios even in NLoS case between the transmitter and the UE of near and far field regimes where the localization is not possible in like systems, but the RIS make it possible. Several scenarios and algorithms have been proposed for using RIS and selecting its elements to be used in the location estimation. Also, linear, and efficient beam sweeping approaches have been proposed using RISs to be exploited in the localization algorithms.
\nThe results showed that the use of RIS in different scenarios will contribute to improving the performance of the UE positioning in a low cost and an energy-efficient way. Also, the appropriate design of RISs can reduce the estimation error, reduces computational complexity and speeds up the localization process.<\/p>\n
