The study addressed the reality of drought in the region in light of rapid climate changes, and the accompanying decrease in rainfall rates, and its impact on water resources and water security.<br \/>\nThe study aimed to compare the performance of seven climate drought indicators across three different time scales, and analyze the characteristics of drought in terms of intensity, size, frequency, and spatial distribution, as well as assessing the extent to which the results of the analysis are affected by different lengths of time series, and verifying the possibility of relying on short series in the event that long climate records are not available.<br \/>\nThe study relied on data.<br \/>\nRainfall for nine meteorological stations for the period (1990-2022), and included analysis of the temporal and spatial distributions of drought. The results showed that the performance of the indicators varied depending on the time scale, with the drought pattern continuing in some regions, especially the central and southeastern regions, and recording severe drought periods during specific years.<br \/>\nThe study also showed that the effect of the length of the time series increases at longer time scales, while the differences remain limited at short scales, which indicates the possibility of obtaining an acceptable scientific assessment of drought even in the absence of long climate records. The results of the study contribute to supporting the understanding of drought dynamics and enhancing the management of water resources in semi-arid regions.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Wahab Muhammad Yunus (Al-Kitab University\/College of Applied Arts) and the membership of Prof. Dr. Youssef Hashem Abdullah (University of Mosul\/College of Engineering), and M.D. Muhannad Talal Youssef (University of Mosul\/College of Engineering), under the supervision and membership of<br \/>\nA.M.D. Omar Miqdad Abdul-Ghani (University of Mosul\/College of Engineering).<br \/>\nThe current study is considered one of the studies supporting the achievement of the sustainable development goals, especially the sixth goal: clean water and sanitation, and the eleventh goal: sustainable cities and local communities, as it contributed to enhancing the quantitative understanding of the process of water infiltration in the soil and modeling it accurately.
