<\/p>\nUnder the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, and with the attendance and follow-up of the Head of the Department of Environmental Health, Dr. Muhammad Yahya Alawi, a seminar titled “Antibiotic Residues” was held in the Department of Environmental Health. The seminar was presented by Assistant Professor Ashraf Siddiq Elias, a lecturer in our college’s Department of Environmental Health.
\nThe lecture covered the global threat posed by antibiotic residues. Antibiotic residues promote the growth of drug-resistant bacterial strains, making antibiotic resistance less effective, thus making common bacterial infections more difficult to treat, and increasing morbidity and mortality rates.
\nAntibiotics that reach the environment, whether through animal waste, sewage, or organic fertilizers, can significantly impact ecosystems by disrupting the microbial balance and affecting beneficial microorganisms, such as nitrogen-fixing bacteria in soil or beneficial bacteria in aquatic environments. This leads to the accumulation of residues in the food chain, resulting in a decrease in biodiversity.
\nThe episode achieved three of the Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 6 (Clean Water), and Goal 15 (Life in the Wild).<\/p>\n
