At that time, it was known as the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Teaching was initially conducted by foreign and Arab faculty members until qualified Iraqi academic staff were prepared. Among the pioneering Iraqi professors in teaching and scientific research within the department were Professor Dr. Abdul-Ilah Abdul-Mawjood and Dr. Nizar Yahya Nuzhat, who focused on preventive medical aspects in Iraq in general and Mosul city in particular.

Later, the department’s name was changed to the Department of Community Medicine, and subsequently to the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2013. The department became responsible for teaching the following subjects:

Fundamentals of Medicine for first-year students.

Medical Ethics for second-year students.

Community Medicine, Nutrition, and Medical Statistics for third-year students.

Community Medicine and Communication Skills for fourth-year students.

Family Medicine for fifth-year students.

Currently, the department is responsible for teaching Community Medicine to third- and fourth-year students, in addition to Family Medicine for fifth-year students since 2018 until the present time.

The department has achieved remarkable progress in establishing postgraduate studies. Master’s studies were initiated in 1987, followed by the Professional Diploma in 1991, which was upgraded to a Higher Diploma in 2003. The PhD program was established in 1993, and the Iraqi Board Fellowship in Family and Community Medicine was added in 2000.

In 2011, the Higher Diploma in Family Medicine was introduced to meet the urgent need of the Ministry of Health for specialized family physicians. In 2018, the Professional Diploma in Family Medicine was added, and the PhD program in Community Medicine was re-established in 2025.

Department Responsibilities

The Department of Family and Community Medicine contributes to building a health-conscious community capable of addressing daily health challenges through health education, prevention, and sustainable healthcare services in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the following activities:

Education and Training

Undergraduate Students

The role of the Department of Family and Community Medicine is to enable undergraduate medical students to appreciate the importance of individual, family, and community health, with emphasis on the most common community health problems. This is achieved through developing students’ intellectual, behavioral, and practical competencies to understand these issues and actively participate in solving them.

The department accomplishes this through theoretical and practical teaching of Family Medicine and Community Medicine for third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students. It also focuses on developing students’ scientific research skills by preparing them to conduct medical and health-related research.

Postgraduate Students

Faculty members of the department supervise postgraduate students in Community Medicine Master’s programs, Higher Diploma in Family Medicine, Iraqi Board Fellowship programs, and the re-established PhD program in Community Medicine.

Postgraduate research mainly focuses on studying the health status of the community and topics related to improving health conditions, primary healthcare services, and global health.

Scientific Research Activities

The Department of Family and Community Medicine represents the central pillar of scientific research within medical colleges, as it focuses on developing research skills and innovative strategies to improve the health of individuals and communities.

Research in this field is distinguished by integrating medical perspectives with social and environmental determinants. Medical research conducted by the department addresses community health problems and seeks appropriate solutions through field studies, applied research, population-based studies, and the use of modern information technology in support of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Community Service Participation

The Department of Family and Community Medicine plays a major role in promoting public health through initiatives and services provided to the community.
