Discussion of a Master’s Thesis in the College of Medicine – Department of Biochemistry<\/p>\n

With the help of God Almighty, the Master’s thesis of the student (Asmaa Talal Mahmoud Ali) was discussed in the Department of Biochemistry at the College of Medicine, University of Mosul, titled “Thyroid Function in Children Under Five Years Old”. The discussion took place on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in the postgraduate hall.<\/p>\n

The study aimed to find reference values for thyroid hormones in 5 groups of children, males and females, divided according to age from birth to five years.
\nThe thesis aimed to establish reference values for thyroid hormones in children under five years old.<\/p>\n

The thesis came out with a set of recommendations, including incorporating thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone tests into the screening tests conducted for newborns.<\/p>\n

The discussion committee consisted of:
\n– Prof. Dr. Rikan Sulaiman Juma’a (Chairman)
\n– Prof. Dr. Ahmad Yahya Dalal Bashi (Member)
\n– Asst. Prof. Dr. Afraa Muhammad Mahmoud Al-Amin (Member)
\n– Lect. Dr. Hazem Alawi Muhammad Al-Shahri (Member and Supervisor)<\/p>\n

The discussion was attended by the Vice Dean for Scientific Affairs, Lect. Dr. Ahmad Abdullah Ahmad, the Head of Postgraduate Studies in the college, and a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.<\/p>\n

The committee decided to accept the thesis after making amendments and awarding the Master’s degree to the student.<\/p>\n

This study is considered one of the studies that achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 “Good Health and Well-being” by:<\/p>\n

– Establishing reference values for thyroid hormones in children, which helps in the early diagnosis of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, reducing the risk of intellectual disability or abnormal growth, and improving the quality of healthcare for children, especially in critical age stages (from birth to 5 years).
\n– Contributing to reducing the rates of long-term disability resulting from undiagnosed diseases.<\/p>\n
