Mosul Studies Center Librarian Participates in Applied Training Course at the Central Library<\/p>\n

\nUnder the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Nizar Al-Dabbagh, Director of the Mosul Studies Center, and in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning – Sustainable Development Unit\/University of Mosul, and as part of the Center’s efforts to involve its administrative staff in specialized training courses that serve the field of work and in its endeavor to improve the skills of its employees and enhance their capabilities in administrative work, Ms. Shahd Waadallah Yassin, Librarian at the Mosul Studies Center, participated in the specialized applied training course entitled: “Automated Cataloging of University Theses According to the RDA System and the MARC21 Standard.” This course, organized by the Central Library of the University of Mosul, lasted for four days. The importance of this course stems from its focus on several scientific and technical aspects, perhaps the most important of which is:
\n– Unifying Bibliographic Descriptions
\nAdopting RDA rules ensures the standardization of metadata recording for university theses, thus reducing discrepancies between catalogs and achieving high accuracy and consistency in information recording.<\/p>\n

– Improved Information Retrieval
\nAutomated cataloging according to MARC 21 enables library systems to provide more accurate and faster searches by title, author, subject, or institution, thus facilitating researchers’ access to theses and dissertations.<\/p>\n

– Keeping Pace with Technological Development
\nAutomated cataloging aligns with digital library environments and modern library management systems, supporting the transition from traditional to advanced electronic catalogs.<\/p>\n

– Supporting Bibliographic Exchange
\nUsing the MARC 21 standard facilitates the exchange of bibliographic records between university libraries both locally and internationally, eliminating the need for re-cataloging.<\/p>\n

– Enhancing the Quality of Scientific Research
\nCataloging according to RDA and MARC 21 helps link library catalogs to institutional repositories, thereby increasing the availability and dissemination of theses and dissertations. The course concluded with a practical session on how to input theses and dissertations according to RDA rules using the Koha software. A practical computer-based exam was also conducted, covering the course content and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 4, 5, 9, 16, and 17.<\/p>\n
