The Mosul Studies Center organizes a training program on the digital variants of the Koha system<\/p>\n

\nUnder the patronage of Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Nizar Al-Dabbagh, Director of the Mosul Studies Center, and in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning – Sustainable Development Unit\/Presidency of the University of Mosul, and as part of the Center’s administration’s efforts, represented by the Center’s Director, to involve administrative staff in organizing academic programs that serve the field of work and in its endeavor to improve the skills of its employees and enhance their capabilities in office work, and within the activities of the Center’s Library Committee, the Mosul Studies Center organized the training program entitled:<\/p>\n

The Digital Variables of the Koha System and Their Impact on Developing Book Classification<\/p>\n

Presented by: Ms. Shahd Waadallah Yassin \/ Librarian at the Mosul Studies Center<\/p>\n

Moderation and discussion by: Dr. Suhaib Mahmoud Khader \/ Member of the Center’s Library Committee and Lecturer in the Department of Literary Studies and Documentation<\/p>\n

This took place between March 11-12, 2026, in the Center’s Art Hall. The objectives of the academic training program on the digital variables of the Koha Integrated Library System and their impact on book classification can be summarized in several points, including:<\/p>\n

1- Introducing participants to the Koha system as one of the most important open-source library management systems used in organizing information resources.<\/p>\n

2- Clarifying the concept of digital variables within the system and how to use them to organize bibliographic data for books within the database.<\/p>\n

3- Training participants in data entry and electronic book classification according to established library science standards, such as cataloging and classification fields.<\/p>\n

4- Demonstrating the impact of digital variables on improving the book classification process, thus facilitating information retrieval and quick and accurate access to resources.<\/p>\n

5- Developing the skills of library staff and researchers in using automated systems for managing and organizing library collections.<\/p>\n

6- Promoting digital transformation in university libraries through the use of modern automated systems for cataloging and classification.<\/p>\n

7- Enhancing the efficiency of library work and reducing human error in classification and cataloging processes.<\/p>\n

The importance of the training program lies in the fact that it:<\/p>\n

1- Contributes to improving the efficiency of library staff in using automated systems.<\/p>\n

2. It helps organize information resources more accurately within library databases.<\/p>\n

3. It facilitates quick access to books and scientific resources.<\/p>\n

4. It keeps pace with modern developments in information technology and digital libraries.<\/p>\n

5. It promotes the use of the Koha system in cataloging, classification, and library collection management.<\/p>\n

The training program’s topics are as follows:<\/p>\n

1. Introduction to the Koha system and its basic components.<\/p>\n

2. The concept of digital variables in the system.<\/p>\n

3. The mechanism for entering bibliographic data.<\/p>\n

Practical applications of cataloging and classifying books.<\/p>\n

This contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 4, 9, and 11.<\/p>\n
