{"id":42331,"date":"2026-04-20T08:13:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T08:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uomosul.edu.iq\/en\/petroleumengineering\/?p=42331"},"modified":"2026-04-20T08:13:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T08:13:41","slug":"sustainable-mining-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uomosul.edu.iq\/en\/petroleumengineering\/2026\/04\/20\/sustainable-mining-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustainable mining industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"426\">Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Ma\u2019an Hassan Abdullah, the Department of Mining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering \/ University of Mosul held its third scientific symposium on Sunday, April 19, 2026, entitled:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"428\" data-end=\"645\">\u201cInvestment and Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Nineveh Governorate,\u201d with broad participation from academics, researchers, and representatives of government institutions and the industrial sector.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"1083\">The first session included a presentation of an applied study evaluating the suitability of rocks from the Fatha Formation for use in ordinary Portland cement production. The results showed that the limestone, clay, and gypsum rocks in the Badush area possess chemical and mineral compositions consistent with Iraqi standard specifications, confirming their potential for efficient investment in supporting the national cement industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1463\">Another lecture addressed the sustainability of the Tigris River in the city of Mosul, highlighting environmental risks resulting from the unregulated exploitation of gravel and sand quarries. It demonstrated that extraction rates exceed natural sedimentation levels, threatening the river\u2019s environmental and hydrological balance, and impacting infrastructure and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1895\">In the second session, a specialized lecture titled \u201cThe Role and Impact of Minerals on Crude Oil and Its Derivatives\u201d explained that the presence of certain metallic elements, such as vanadium and nickel, even in small quantities, poses significant challenges in refining processes by poisoning catalysts and increasing corrosion within industrial units, in addition to negatively affecting the quality of petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"2111\">The lecture also discussed the impact of sulfur in crude oil, noting that high sulfur content reduces oil quality, increases processing costs, and leads to environmental harm due to the emission of polluting gases.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2364\">It further highlighted the importance of quality indicators such as density, specific gravity, and API gravity, and their role in classifying oil into light, medium, and heavy categories, which directly affects its economic value and ease of refining.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2693\">These scientific contributions reflect the symposium\u2019s direction toward strengthening integration between the mining and petroleum sectors through a better understanding of how mineral properties influence the quality of hydrocarbon resources, thereby improving efficiency, reducing costs, and minimizing environmental impacts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"3047\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">At the conclusion of the symposium, participants emphasized the importance of utilizing these scientific findings to support sustainable investment policies, promote the use of modern technologies, and develop legislative and regulatory frameworks to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental preservation in Nineveh Governorate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Ma\u2019an Hassan Abdullah, the Department of Mining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering \/ University of Mosul held its third scientific symposium on Sunday, April 19, 2026, entitled: \u201cInvestment and Sustainable Development of the Mining Sector in Nineveh Governorate,\u201d with broad participation from academics, researchers, and representatives of government institutions and the industrial sector.
