Master’s Thesis Defense<\/p>\n

By the grace of God, on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the College of Law, University of Mosul, the Master’s thesis entitled \u201cRemedies for Crimes of Slavery and Sexual Slavery in Non-International Armed Conflicts \u2013 The Yazidi Case Study\u201d was defended by student Khdida Ziyad Shamo Al-Hamou Basha.<\/p>\n

The thesis addressed the grave violations suffered by the Yazidi community, particularly Yazidi women and girls, in 2014 at the hands of the ISIS terrorist organization. It examined the conceptual and legal frameworks of the crimes of slavery and sexual slavery, highlighting efforts to document these violations, available and proposed remedies for victims, and the challenges hindering the achievement of justice and redress.<\/p>\n

The thesis aimed to analyze the international and national legal frameworks that criminalize these crimes, demonstrate the effectiveness of judicial accountability mechanisms in providing redress to victims, and reveal shortcomings in international and national responses. It also offered proposals to strengthen justice, reparation, and ensure that violations are not repeated in the future.<\/p>\n

The examining committee consisted of:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Professor Omar Saleh Ali \u2013 Member \u2013 Associate Professor of Public International Law \/ University of Jordan.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Assistant Professor Suha Hamid Salim \u2013 Member \u2013 Assistant Professor of Public International Law \/ College of Law \u2013 University of Mosul.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Assistant Professor Suhaib Khalid Jassim \u2013 Member and Supervisor \u2013 Assistant Professor of Public Law \/ College of Political Science \u2013 University of Mosul.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the discussion, the committee commended the scholarly effort and the academic level of the thesis, recognizing its scientific and humanitarian importance in the field of international law and human rights.<\/p>\n
