{"id":41427,"date":"2025-08-17T06:37:30","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uomosul.edu.iq\/en\/science\/?p=41427"},"modified":"2025-08-17T06:37:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-17T06:37:30","slug":"%f0%9f%93%a2-ph-d-dissertation-defense-in-the-department-of-biology-college-of-science-university-of-mosul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uomosul.edu.iq\/en\/science\/2025\/08\/17\/%f0%9f%93%a2-ph-d-dissertation-defense-in-the-department-of-biology-college-of-science-university-of-mosul\/","title":{"rendered":"\ud83d\udce2 Ph.D. Dissertation Defense in the Department of Biology \u2013 College of Science, University of Mosul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"230\" data-end=\"609\">On <strong data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"263\">Wednesday, August 13, 2025<\/strong>, the Department of Biology at the College of Science, University of Mosul, held the defense of the Ph.D. dissertation by <strong data-start=\"385\" data-end=\"427\">Marwa Badr Faleh Abdulrahman Al-Abbadi<\/strong>, entitled:<br data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"441\" \/><strong data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"607\">\u201cThe Effect of Physical Mutagenesis on the Production of L-Asparaginase Enzyme from Locally Isolated Yeasts and the Study of Some of Its Biological Applications.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"816\">The session was attended by <strong data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"671\">Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim<\/strong>, Dean of the College of Science, along with her scientific and administrative assistants, the Head of Department, and several faculty members.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"845\">\ud83d\udd2c <strong data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"843\">About the Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"2069\">\n<li data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"1044\">\n<p data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"1044\">The study involved the collection, isolation, and identification of yeasts from different fruits, leaves, and soils in Mosul, Iraq, using morphological, biochemical, and molecular methods (PCR).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1153\">\n<p data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1153\">The research successfully registered <strong data-start=\"1084\" data-end=\"1126\">eight yeast strains for the first time<\/strong> in the <strong data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1150\">NCBI GenBank<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1302\">\n<p data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1302\">The strain <em data-start=\"1167\" data-end=\"1191\">M. guilliermondii M120<\/em> showed the highest potential for L-Asparaginase production, with improved yields after UV exposure (254 nm).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1459\">\n<p data-start=\"1305\" data-end=\"1459\">Other strains, including <em data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1351\">P. kudriavzevil M64<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1368\">H. uvarum M85<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1374\" data-end=\"1395\">R. mucilaginosa M92<\/em>, also exhibited enhanced enzyme production after mutagenesis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"2069\">\n<p data-start=\"1462\" data-end=\"2069\">The enzyme was extracted, purified, and lyophilized, then tested for several applications:<br data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1555\" \/>\u2705 Inhibition of phytopathogenic fungi.<br data-start=\"1595\" data-end=\"1598\" \/>\u2705 Reduction of pathogenic genes (FOW-1 and SIX6) responsible for vascular wilt and root rot.<br data-start=\"1692\" data-end=\"1695\" \/>\u2705 Cytotoxicity evaluation (MTT assay) against cancer cell lines HL-60 and K-562 compared to normal HdFn cells, with K-562 showing the highest sensitivity, later confirmed by <strong data-start=\"1871\" data-end=\"1903\">High Content Screening (HCS)<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"1907\" \/>\u2705 Evaluation of yeast filtrates on the growth of <em data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1968\">Geranium<\/em> plants as eco-friendly growth promoters in line with the <strong data-start=\"2026\" data-end=\"2066\">Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2071\" data-end=\"2103\">\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83c\udfeb <strong data-start=\"2077\" data-end=\"2101\">Discussion Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2511\">\n<li data-start=\"2104\" data-end=\"2161\">\n<p data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2161\"><strong data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2151\">Prof. Dr. Muthanna Jassim Mohammed Khalaf<\/strong> (Chair)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2162\" data-end=\"2211\">\n<p data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2211\"><strong data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2209\">Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil Ibrahim<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2263\">\n<p data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2263\"><strong data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2261\">Asst.
