The master’s thesis entitled \u201cstratigraphy of foraminifera and depositional environment of the kulush formation in the butya section, bikhir fold in northern Iraq\u201d was discussed at the Department of Geology and Petroleum\u00a0 Sciences at the College of Science \/ University of Mosul on Monday, October 6, 2025.<\/p>\n

Part of the discussion was attended by the head of the department, Dr. Omar Ahmed moloud, and a number of department teachers and graduate students.<\/p>\n

The thesis was presented by the student Ryan Mahmoud Ahmed Sultan, and the aim of his study was to make a detailed classification of the floating and benthic foraminifera populations, and determine the life zone, relative age and ancient environment of the kulush formation in the butya section of northern Iraq.<\/p>\n

The study included 50 rock samples taken from the section with studied variations, prepared and washed using standard methods and a series of sieves of different sizes, then dried and analyzed under a binocular microscope to determine the types of foraminifera.<\/p>\n

35 species of floating foraminifera belonging to 10 genera have been classified and described, and 13 species of benthic foraminifera belonging to 10 genera as well.<\/p>\n

The results showed that the age of the Kolosh formation in this section dates back to the end of the early Paleocene \u2013 late Paleocene, and also showed that the depositional environment of the lower parts of the formation represents deep marine environments, while the upper parts indicate a gradual transition to shallower environments located at the top of the continental slope.<\/p>\n

The study recommended the need to conduct an integrated sedimentary study of various sections of the kulush formation to find out the extension of the sedimentary basin, as well as to carry out a detailed stratigraphic and geochemical study of its sites scattered inside Iraq, because of this formation of geological and economic importance as one of the main formations for oil generation.<\/p>\n

This study contributes to achieving the seventh goal (clean and affordable energy) and the thirteenth goal (climate action), by enhancing the geological understanding of oil formations and the analysis of ancient depositional environments to serve the sustainability of Natural Resources and energy management in Iraq. It also intersects with the fourth goal (quality education) by supporting scientific research and advanced training for graduate students in the field of Applied Geology.<\/p>\n
