The Chemistry Department at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Preparation of Heterogeneous Solid Catalysts from Broad Bean Shells for Biodiesel Production from Non-Edible Oils” on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in the presence of several professors, researchers, and graduate students.<\/p>\n

The thesis, presented by student Hajar Mahmoud Khader Ahmed from the Industrial Chemistry branch, addressed the utilization of biomass waste from broad bean shells to prepare a heterogeneous solid basic catalyst for biodiesel production, and the preparation of magnetically activated carbon nanoparticles for purifying water and fuel from certain contaminants.<\/p>\n

The research included the preparation of a solid basic ash catalyst and its use in producing methyl and methyl-ethyl biodiesel from used cooking oil, along with studying the possibility of reusing the catalyst for multiple cycles. The second part of the thesis focused on the preparation of magnetically activated carbon nanoparticles and their use in purifying water from methylene blue dye and purifying kerosene from dibenzothiophene, while demonstrating the carbon’s ability to be reused with suitable efficiency.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Chemistry Department, Professor Dr. Firas Ahmed Dhunoun, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Abdul-Razzaq Younis Mahmoud in recognition of her participation and scientific contributions, which enriched the discussion and contributed to the development of the thesis.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the discussion, the committee commended the student’s scientific effort and the importance of the study’s findings in the fields of renewable energy and pollution treatment.<\/p>\n
