On Sunday, February 1, 2026, the Chemistry Department at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Preparation and Characterization of Novel Complexes of Transition and Main Elements with Thiobenzene-Derived Ligands and Evaluation of Their Biological Activity,” submitted by student Shahd Ashraf Qasim from the Inorganic Chemistry Branch.<\/p>\n

The thesis addressed the preparation of thirty-six novel coordination complexes, in addition to the synthesis of three basic ligands. The research was divided into four main sections. The first section involved the preparation of the three ligands (L1, L2, and L3) by reacting the molar equivalents of sodium hydroxide and para-tert-butylthiophene with one of the dibromoalkanes: 1,2-dibromoethane, 1,3-dibromopropane, or 1,4-dibromobutane.<\/p>\n

The second focus was on preparing coordination complexes of these ligands with different molar ratios between the ligand and the metal ion (1:1 and 1:2), using salts of the metals Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II). This resulted in the formation of complexes with novel formulas. The third focus addressed the preparation of polynuclear complexes through the reaction of the ligands with a mixture of the same metal salts in a molar ratio of (2:Cd:2), forming complexes with the general formula [M\u2082Cd(Ln)Cl\u2086].<\/p>\n

The ligands and their complexes were characterized using a range of analytical techniques, including elemental analysis, spectroscopic measurements (infrared spectroscopy, electron spectroscopy, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), as well as magnetic susceptibility and molar electrical conductivity measurements. The research also included a preliminary study to evaluate the biological activity of the prepared ligands and complexes against two types of bacteria: Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The results showed significant inhibitory activity for some of them, indicating their potential for future use in pharmaceutical or biochemical applications.<\/p>\n
