As part of supporting scientific research and enhancing academic competencies, Master\u2019s student Ahmed Ali Hamid Al-Safawi<\/strong> from the Department of Geology and Petroleum \/ College of Science presented a seminar in the field of sedimentology on Monday, 18 May 2026, attended by a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.<\/p>\n

The seminar, entitled \u201cSedimentology and Provenance of Sandstone Rocks of the Kolosh Formation in Selected Areas, Northern Iraq,\u201d<\/strong> was delivered under the supervision of Professor Dr. Zaid Abdulwahab Malik<\/strong> and Lecturer Dr. Sharif Thamoud Al-Hamed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The seminar aimed to conduct a detailed petrographic study to identify mineral constituents and determine their proportions in order to classify and name the rocks, as well as to infer the tectonic setting, paleoclimate, and mineral maturity of the studied formations.<\/p>\n

It also included a comprehensive geochemical analysis of major, trace, and rare earth elements to clarify their behavior and classify the rocks geochemically. In addition, rare earth element patterns and spider diagrams were constructed.<\/p>\n

The study led to the interpretation of source rocks, tectonic setting, depositional environment, paleoclimate, weathering conditions, and geochemical maturity of the studied rocks.<\/p>\n

The seminar witnessed fruitful scientific discussions and an exchange of expertise between faculty members and students, contributing to the enhancement of research skills.<\/p>\n
