The Department of Geology and Petroleum at the College of Science organized a scientific course entitled \u201cThe Impact of Excessive Groundwater Exploitation on Food Security in Nineveh Province\u201d<\/strong>, held during the period 10\u201314 May 2026<\/strong>, with the participation of a distinguished group of university faculty members and specialists concerned with food security issues from both the University of Mosul and other institutions.<\/p>\n

The course addressed several key topics, most notably the causes of excessive groundwater consumption and the serious environmental consequences resulting from it. It also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about the risks associated with the depletion of water resources and their direct implications for food security and the agricultural sector in the province.<\/p>\n

In addition, the course reviewed the major groundwater aquifers in Nineveh Province, including water types and levels, recharge and storage zones, and fluctuations resulting from varying climatic conditions. Special attention was given to the importance of preserving strategic groundwater reserves to ensure the sustainability of food security in the province and the region as a whole.<\/p>\n

In its concluding recommendations, the course emphasized that achieving food security for future generations requires the adoption of modern water resource management strategies, as well as the implementation of strict regulations and procedures to govern groundwater utilization and ensure its conservation.<\/p>\n
