The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a Master\u2019s thesis entitled \u201cDetermination of Some Drugs Used in the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus\u201d<\/strong>, presented by the student Shaimaa Adnan Dawood Suleiman Al-Sharifi<\/strong> on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, corresponding to the 28th of Ramadan.<\/p>\n

The thesis aimed to determine Metformin<\/strong> using a spectrophotometric method based on the fourth-derivative spectrum in the presence of Sitagliptin<\/strong>, both of which are among the most commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.<\/p>\n

Metformin is widely used to regulate blood glucose levels by inhibiting glucose production in the liver and reducing triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Sitagliptin belongs to the class of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV (DPP-4) inhibitors<\/strong>, and pharmaceutical formulations often combine both compounds in varying proportions to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.<\/p>\n

The study focused on derivative spectrophotometry as an important analytical technique for obtaining qualitative and quantitative information from overlapping spectra. Various derivative orders were employed to resolve spectral overlap at selected wavelengths, enabling accurate analysis of pharmaceutical mixtures.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the research examined mixing ratios corresponding to pharmaceutical formulations, where the first component was determined in the presence of the second using the fourth-derivative technique with high analytical sensitivity. The results demonstrated excellent accuracy, achieving a recovery percentage of 102.47%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One of the most notable features of the proposed method is its environmentally friendly nature. The analytical procedure required only water as a solvent, eliminating the need for organic solvents, acids, bases, or other chemical reagents. Moreover, the technique did not require any additional energy input, thereby minimizing chemical waste and making it a safe and practical approach for laboratory applications.<\/p>\n

The examination committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Lamia Adnan Sarsam<\/strong> and included Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Sami Saeed Al-Saffar<\/strong> and Lecturer Dr. Hiba Abdul Salam Mohammed<\/strong> as members. The thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Hanaa Shukr Mahmood Ahmed<\/strong>, who also served as a committee member.<\/p>\n
