As part of its commitment to supporting scientific research and enhancing the academic capabilities of postgraduate students, the Department of Geology and Petroleum at the College of Science, University of Mosul, held a graduate seminar on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, attended by a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.<\/p>\n

The seminar, entitled \u201cPalynostratigraphy of the Sarmord Formation (Early Cretaceous) in Selected Sections of Northern Iraq,\u201d<\/strong> was presented by M.Sc. student Sufyan Taha Jijo<\/strong> under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Maha Abdulhamid Mustafa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The study focused on the identification of dinocyst species within the investigated sections and the establishment of a biostratigraphic framework based on dinoflagellate cyst assemblages to determine the age of the Sarmord Formation. It also provided a paleoenvironmental interpretation based on palynological and lithological data. Samples were carefully collected and processed using standard palynological techniques involving hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF), followed by sorting and mounting on microscope slides for detailed microscopic examination.<\/p>\n

The seminar contributed to enriching scientific discussion and fostering the exchange of academic knowledge and expertise, thereby supporting the development of research skills and enhancing the academic performance of postgraduate students.<\/p>\n
