When science meets practical application, new horizons open for students and visitors to explore the latest scientific methods and technologies used in the treatment of cancer.<\/p>\n

The Department of Medical Physics at the College of Science organized a scientific workshop entitled \u201cApplications of Medical Physics in the Treatment of Cancer Diseases\u201d<\/strong> as part of the activities of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2025<\/strong>, with the participation of a number of faculty members and students from the Department of Medical Physics.<\/p>\n

The workshop featured two main scientific lectures. The first lecture, delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Qusay Khattab Omar<\/strong>, focused on the use of non-ionizing radiation in internal and external medical therapies, including microwave and ultrasound technologies, and their role in stimulating living tissues and enabling targeted drug delivery within the human body. The lecture also highlighted the associated physiological and non-thermal effects of these technologies. In addition, it reviewed various ionizing radiation treatment modalities, including external beam radiotherapy, brachytherapy, the Gamma Knife system for the treatment of cranial tumors, proton therapy techniques, and radioactive seed implants used for targeted tumor treatment, particularly in the reproductive system.<\/p>\n

The second lecture, presented by Lecturer Shaimaa Talal Atta Allah<\/strong>, addressed the medical devices utilized in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy, including Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanners<\/strong>, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems<\/strong>, linear accelerators<\/strong>, and therapeutic X-ray units<\/strong>. The lecture highlighted the crucial role of these technologies in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer.<\/p>\n

This workshop was organized as part of the department\u2019s efforts to enhance students\u2019 practical experience and strengthen the connection between academic knowledge and modern medical technologies used in cancer treatment. Such initiatives contribute to preparing highly qualified scientific professionals capable of keeping pace with scientific advancements and addressing contemporary healthcare challenges.<\/p>\n

The workshop aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/strong>, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being)<\/strong> through supporting the development of advanced cancer treatment methods; SDG 4 (Quality Education)<\/strong> by promoting applied learning and scientific capacity building; SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure)<\/strong> through encouraging the use of advanced technologies in healthcare; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)<\/strong> by fostering collaboration between academic institutions and the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n
