Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi<\/strong>, the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Hiyam Adel Ibrahim<\/strong>, and the follow-up of the Head of the Department of Geology and Petroleum Science, Assistant Professor Omar Khallouq Mohammed Sajid<\/strong>, the Department of Geology and Petroleum Science organized a scientific workshop on the morning of Thursday, 12 February 2026<\/strong>, entitled:<\/p>\n

\u201cFuture Prospects of Geological Sciences and Petroleum\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop was held as part of the activities of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2026<\/strong>, within the University\u2019s efforts to promote a culture of innovation and employ geological sciences in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.<\/p>\n

The workshop discussed the concept of the carbon footprint<\/strong> as an indicator measuring the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO\u2082)<\/strong> generated by human and industrial activities, expressed in tons of CO\u2082 equivalent. Participants emphasized that reducing the carbon footprint is a key objective in mitigating the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

The presentations highlighted the vital role of geologists in reducing carbon emissions through Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)<\/strong> technologies. This includes selecting suitable geological reservoirs such as depleted oil fields and deep saline formations, as well as evaluating rock properties including porosity, permeability, and cap-rock integrity to ensure safe and long-term carbon storage.<\/p>\n

The workshop also addressed the importance of assessing reservoir rocks and analyzing their petrophysical properties. In addition, it explored the role of mineral weathering<\/strong>, whereby certain rock types, such as basalt and ultramafic rocks, contribute to the permanent sequestration of CO\u2082 in the form of stable carbonate minerals.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the workshop highlighted the contribution of geological sciences to the development of renewable energy projects, particularly geothermal energy<\/strong>, with a focus on selecting optimal sites that support sustainable development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Abdul-Ilah Mahmoud<\/strong> and Dr. Radwan Khalil Al-Atroshi<\/strong>, and was attended by a distinguished group of university academics, researchers, and specialists interested in this field.<\/p>\n
