The Department of Chemistry<\/strong>, College of Science, University of Mosul<\/strong>, held the defense of a Ph.D. dissertation on Thursday, June 18, 2026<\/strong>, entitled:<\/p>\n

\u201cEstimation of Meteorin-Like Protein in Patients with Atherosclerosis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The dissertation was presented by Ph.D. candidate Asar Ihsan Abdullah Mahmoud Al-Afandi<\/strong>, in the presence of the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The study aimed to determine the level of Meteorin-Like Protein (METRNL)<\/strong> in patients with atherosclerosis and apparently healthy individuals, identify the major risk factors affecting its level, investigate its relationship with biochemical variables associated with the disease, evaluate its gene expression levels, and isolate and purify the protein from blood plasma while determining its molecular weight.<\/p>\n

The findings revealed a significant reduction in both the concentration and gene expression of Meteorin-Like Protein<\/strong> in patients with atherosclerosis compared with the control group. The protein showed a positive correlation with protective biomarkers and antioxidant indicators, and a negative correlation with atherogenic markers and high-risk lipid parameters.<\/p>\n

The study also successfully isolated and purified Meteorin-Like Protein<\/strong> from blood plasma and demonstrated that the Sephadex G-100<\/strong> column was the most suitable method for determining its molecular weight, which was found to be 30,422 Daltons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Dhikra Ali Alloush<\/strong>, while the dissertation was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Saba Zaki Mahmoud Khudr<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the defense, the committee commended the dissertation for its high scientific quality and its significance in the medical and diagnostic fields, emphasizing that its findings provide valuable support for future research related to cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n

The Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim<\/strong>, also presented a Letter of Appreciation<\/strong> to Prof. Dr. Siran Sattar Salih<\/strong> from Kirkuk University<\/strong> in recognition of her valuable scientific contributions and active participation as a member of the examination committee.<\/p>\n
