On Monday, July 20, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Mosul discussed<\/span> the doctoral<\/span> dissertation<\/span> tagged<\/span> \u201d evaluation<\/span> of<\/span> methods for early<\/span> diagnosis<\/span> of bacterial<\/span> neonatal<\/span> sepsis<\/span> in<\/span> Mosul<\/span> and<\/span> the possibility of improving them \u201c<\/span> The presentation was made by PhD student Saadallah Fathi from the microbiology branch, in the presence of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants for scientific and administrative affairs, the head of the life sciences department, and a number of faculty teachers.<\/span> The thesis<\/span> was aimed<\/span> at assessing the accuracy of diagnostic methods used to detect bacterial sepsis in newborns, searching for more efficient and fast molecular diagnostic methods and biomarkers for early detection of infection.<\/span> The study included<\/span> 300<\/span> newborns<\/span> diagnosed<\/span> with sepsis<\/span> or suspected of being clinically<\/span> infected in a number of Mosul city hospitals.<\/span> The results of the study showed<\/span> that traditional<\/span> diagnostic<\/span> methods<\/span> have<\/span> limited<\/span> sensitivity<\/span> in the early<\/span> detection<\/span> of neonatal sepsis, while molecular diagnostic methods based on the 16S rRNA gene outperformed in terms of accuracy and speed in detecting infection.<\/span> The results<\/span> also showed<\/span> that procalcitonin<\/span> (PCT<\/span>) is one of the most accurate biomarkers in early diagnosis, along with the important role of IL-23 and IFN-\u03b1 in enhancing the confirmation of infection.<\/span> The study<\/span> was able to register four new bacterial strains isolated from infected newborns in the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).<\/span> The importance of the thesis is highlighted<\/span> in addressing<\/span> bacterial<\/span> neonatal sepsis<\/span> as<\/span> one of the dangerous health conditions that threaten the lives of children during the first days after birth, as the results of the study confirmed that the combination of molecular diagnostic techniques and biomarkers represents a promising approach for early and accurate detection of infection, contributing to the timely start of treatment, improving survival chances and reducing complications and deaths among newborns.<\/span> The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Abdul Jabbar Hussein Mohammed, with the membership of assistant professor Dr. Angham Jabbar Alwan Salman, assistant professor Dr. Yunus Jassim Abdullah Musa, assistant professor Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Mahmoud Taha, assistant professor Dr. Inas Abdel Moneim Hussein Mohammed, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Mohsen Ayoub Issa Ahmed and assistant professor Dr. OS Ibrahim Suleiman Nader.<\/span> On the sidelines of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to the dean of the Higher Institute of health technologies and artificial intelligence \/ northern Technical University, assistant professor Dr. Yunus Jassim Abdullah Musa, in appreciation of his participation in the doctoral dissertation discussion Committee.<\/span> We wish<\/span> our dear<\/span> students<\/span> continued<\/span> success and success.<\/span> Government information and Communication Division<\/span> Monday<\/span>, July 20, 2026<\/span><\/p>\n
