The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science \u2013 University of Mosul, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, discussed the tagged doctoral thesis \u201d detection and inhibition of surtase enzymes in staphylococci isolated from clinical sources \u201d by doctoral student Ethar Mohammed Saleh Yousef from the branch of microbiology.<\/span> The thesis dealt with the evaluation<\/span> of the possibility of inhibition<\/span> of the enzyme Sortase (Sortase)<\/span> as an alternative<\/span> and innovative<\/span> therapeutic<\/span> mechanism<\/span> to reduce<\/span> the virulence<\/span> of staphylococcal<\/span> bacteria<\/span> and confront<\/span> their normal<\/span> and antibiotic<\/span>-resistant<\/span> strains<\/span>, through<\/span> the use of plant extracts<\/span> and pure natural compounds.<\/span> The main<\/span> results<\/span> and conclusions<\/span> of the study<\/span> : Superiority<\/span> of natural<\/span> extracts<\/span>: the results showed a remarkable superiority of alcoholic extracts of lemon and orange peels and natural juices in inhibiting bacterial growth, thanks to their high content of hydroxyl aggregates and aromatic bonds diagnosed by FTIR technology.<\/span> Molecular<\/span> inhibition<\/span> of biofilms<\/span>: analysis<\/span> of<\/span> HPLC<\/span> technology revealed<\/span> the presence of the compound \u201cnaringenin\u201d in lemon peel extract, which in synergy with \u201cascorbic acid\u201d proved high efficiency in the almost complete inhibition of biofilms formation (Biofilms).<\/span> Disruption<\/span> of gene<\/span> expression<\/span>: molecular<\/span> tests using qRT<\/span>-PCR<\/span> technology have proven<\/span> that these<\/span> compounds<\/span> significantly<\/span> reduce<\/span> the gene<\/span> expression<\/span> of the SrtA<\/span> gene<\/span>, which disrupts<\/span> the production of the enzyme surtase, which is responsible for the fixation of adhesion proteins and the settlement of bacteria within the host tissues.<\/span> Micro microscopic abnormalities:<\/span> SEM scanning electron microscope (SEM) images<\/span> showed<\/span> the occurrence of gross structural abnormalities<\/span> and obvious damage to the wall and membrane of bacterial cells treated with a concentration below the minimum inhibitor (Sub-MIC) of the naringenin compound.<\/span> The study<\/span> concludes<\/span> that the molecular<\/span> targeting<\/span> of virulence<\/span> factors<\/span> and the inactivation<\/span> of the SrtA<\/span> gene<\/span> represents<\/span> a modern<\/span> and promising<\/span> pathway<\/span> for the weakening of bacteria, and supports the employment of biocompounds as substitutes or supporting agents for antibiotics in the face of intractable strains.<\/span> The discussion<\/span> Committee<\/span> was chaired<\/span> by<\/span> Dr. Ismail Ibrahim Dawood Salem,<\/span> and the membership<\/span> of<\/span>: assistant<\/span> professor<\/span> Dr.<\/span> Shaker<\/span> Ghazi<\/span> jerjis<\/span> Hussein<\/span>, assistant<\/span> professor<\/span> Dr. OS<\/span> Ibrahim<\/span> Suleiman<\/span> Nader<\/span>, assistant<\/span> professor<\/span> Dr. Mohammed<\/span> Taha<\/span> Mahmoud<\/span> Khdeir<\/span>, assistant<\/span> professor<\/span> Dr. Inas<\/span> Abdel<\/span> Moneim<\/span> Hussein<\/span> Mohammed<\/span>, and under the supervision<\/span> and membership<\/span> of Prof. Dr. Mohsen Ayoub Issa Ahmed.<\/span> On behalf of the dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the esteemed, the rapporteur of the Department of Life Sciences presented a book and appreciation to Professor Dr. Ismail Ibrahim Dawood from Al Noor University in appreciation of his efforts in chairing the student discussion Committee .<\/span> We wish<\/span> our dear<\/span> students<\/span> continued excellence and<\/span> success<\/span> in their scientific career.<\/span><\/p>\n
