The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science discussed, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the doctoral thesis tagged “the effect of propranolol and timolol on the healing of skin burns: a physiological and histological study in rabbits”, submitted by doctoral student Manal Younis Ahmed al-Abadi.<\/span> The thesis<\/span> dealt<\/span> with the<\/span> study of the effect of propranolol and timolol,<\/span> as beta<\/span>-adrenergic receptor<\/span> blockers<\/span>, in promoting<\/span> the healing<\/span> of skin<\/span> burns<\/span> in<\/span> rabbits<\/span>, by assessing the physiological, biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical changes associated with the healing process.<\/span> The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of orally administered propranolol and topically used timolol in accelerating the healing of burns, comparing their effects in shrinking the wound area, inflammatory response and tissue regeneration, as well as studying a number of biochemical indicators associated with the healing process.<\/span> The study involved<\/span> 55<\/span> male<\/span> white<\/span> New Zealand rabbits<\/span>, five of which were assigned to the preliminary study and 50 rabbits to the main study.<\/span> The results<\/span> showed<\/span> an improvement<\/span> in burn healing in the two treated groups compared to the positive control group, where topical timolol recorded the highest percentage of wound area reduction, amounting to 88.58% on the fourteenth day, compared to 57.20% for the propranolol group and 36.05% for the positive control group.<\/span> Histological<\/span> examinations<\/span> also revealed<\/span> accelerated<\/span> epithelial<\/span> re-covering<\/span>, granulation tissue formation and regularity of collagen fibers, along with a regression of inflammatory manifestations, in particular in the group treated with timolol.<\/span> Biochemical and histological immunological analyzes<\/span> showed<\/span> changes<\/span> in indicators associated with inflammation and tissue regeneration, supporting the clinical and histological results of the study.<\/span> The thesis concluded that beta-adrenergic receptor blockers<\/span> showed<\/span> positive<\/span> effects<\/span> in promoting<\/span> the healing of skin burns under approved experimental conditions, with the superiority of topical timolol in accelerating the healing process, which opens up future research prospects to study the possibility of using these drugs as auxiliary treatments for burns.<\/span> The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Munif Abdul Mustafa, With the membership of Prof. Dr. Osama Hazem Ismail, Prof. Dr. Fatima Qasim Mohammed Hassan, Assistant Prof. Dr. Ilham Abdullah Ali, Assistant Prof. Dr. Marib Hamid Ahmed, under the supervision and membership of Assistant Prof. Dr. Waad Sabri Shaher Hussein, and Prof. Dr. FIHA Azhar Mohieddin.<\/span> At the end of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, extended her written Thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Osama Hazem Ismail and assistant professor Dr. Marib Hamid Ahmed, teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry, Al-Noor University, in appreciation of their scientific efforts and their active participation in the discussion Committee, and their contribution to enriching it with observations and sober scientific interventions.<\/span> This discussion comes within the framework of the scientific and academic activity of the Faculty of Science \u2013 University of Mosul, and its keenness to support scientific research and promote specialized studies in the physiological, histological and applied fields.<\/span> We wish<\/span> the student<\/span> more<\/span> success<\/span> and success in her scientific career, and the professors of the Faculty of Science full-time excellence and academic giving.<\/span><\/p>\n
