The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul held a Ph.D. dissertation defense on Thursday, July 31, 2025, titled:
\n\u201cA Field Study to Estimate Energy Expenditure Over Various Running Distances Using Selected Physiological Indicators.\u201d
\nThe defense took place at the Um Al-Rabeein Hall in the college, in the presence of Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul; Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Younis Al-Juraisi, Dean of the College; Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Raad Ibrahim, Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs; Dr. Ammar Badr Al-Hilali, Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs; and a number of faculty members from the department.<\/p>\n
The dissertation, presented by Ph.D. candidate Ahmed Yaqzan Saleh Ahmed from the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, aimed to explore the differences in total energy expenditure (TEE) before and after incorporating blood lactate measurements across various running distances.<\/p>\n
The study addressed several key aspects, including:<\/p>\n
Energy expenditure vs. energy cost,<\/p>\n
Energy dynamics in aerobic vs. anaerobic activity.<\/p>\n
Key Findings:
\n100 meters: Anaerobic system dominance, with significant contributions from lactate and EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), and reduced oxygen consumption.<\/p>\n
400 meters: A mixed energy profile involving both aerobic and anaerobic systems.<\/p>\n
3000 meters: Predominantly aerobic processes, heavily reliant on oxygen consumption.<\/p>\n
Statistical analysis underscored the critical role of the anaerobic system in short-distance efforts, with decreasing influence as the distance increased.<\/p>\n
