In Support of Sustainable Development… Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Researches Initiates Field Trial to Evaluate Faba Bean Genotypes.

As part of its scientific activities for the 2025-2026 winter season, the Genetic Resources Department at the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Researches at the University of Mosul began implementing a specialized field trial aimed at evaluating new genotypes of faba bean (Vicia faba) crop.

The experiment was carried out on Monday, November 24, 2025, in the Center’s plastic greenhouses, where the different genotypes were planted to study their performance under local field conditions.

The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the productive and qualitative traits of these genotypes, as well as their degree of adaptation to the local environment. The ultimate aim is to select the best-performing genotypes and recommend them to farmers in the future, thereby contributing to the improvement of this important crop’s productivity.

The implementation of the experiment was supervised by a team of specialized researchers from the Center, including Assist. Prof. Dr. Ma’an Mohammed Saleh and Assist. Lecturer Ammar Habib Mahmoud.

This activity is part of the Center’s continuous effort to conserve and evaluate plant genetic resources. This research falls under the efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), by developing high-yielding varieties capable of adapting to environmental challenges, thus supporting the sustainability of the agricultural sector and food security in Iraq.
