Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research

   As part of the ongoing activities of the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research at the University of Mosul, the Department of Agronomy commenced, on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, the implementation of research experiments under the supervision of Dr. Islam Abdul Sattar Ismeer. These experiments aim to evaluate pea varieties newly introduced to Iraq under different planting dates, within a research program designed to develop agricultural production and improve the efficiency of locally cultivated varieties.

   The experiments were conducted in the Center’s plastic greenhouses under rainfed (dryland) conditions, allowing for accurate simulation of local environmental conditions and the generation of reliable scientific data on the performance of the introduced varieties.

   This project aims to assess the genetic adaptability of the new varieties by determining their ability to tolerate local environmental conditions and evaluating their productive performance through the selection of high-yielding or superior-quality varieties compared to local ones. In addition, the research evaluates their resistance to biotic stresses, particularly prevalent diseases and pests in the new environment.

   The study also seeks to identify the optimum planting date for each variety to ensure the best growth and yield. Furthermore, it contributes to crop diversification by introducing high-quality and high-yield alternative crops, thereby increasing farmers’ income, supporting the sustainability of crop rotations, and enhancing food security.

   This contribution falls within the framework of supporting applied scientific research undertaken by the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research – University of Mosul, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
