The Land Swallows the Fields… An Early Warning to Neighboring Countries, Foremost Iraq.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Director of the Dryland and Arid Agriculture Research Center, Professor Dr. Mohammed Subhi Al-Taweel, the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research at the University of Mosul, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit at the University Presidency, organized a specialized scientific workshop on Thursday, 8 January 2026, entitled:
“Sustainable Management of Gypsiferous and Calcareous Soils through Conservation Agriculture.”
This workshop was held in light of the increasing environmental challenges threatening agricultural lands in the region, representing an early warning to neighboring countries, foremost among them Iraq. The workshop aimed to highlight the vital importance of sustainable management of gypsiferous and calcareous soils and the role of conservation agriculture techniques in enhancing agricultural productivity, achieving environmental balance, and protecting natural resources.
The workshop lectures were delivered by a distinguished group of specialized academics:
-
Dr. Omar Nabhan Abdul Qader
-
Dr. Khalid Akhleef Nazzal
-
Dr. Islam Abdul Sattar Ismeer Al-Rajabo
The workshop sessions addressed in depth the mechanisms for transitioning from the concept of “crisis management” to “sound governance” through adopting conservation agriculture techniques as a strategic option that contributes to protecting gypsiferous and calcareous soils, conserving water reserves, and ensuring the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.
The workshop was attended by a number of directors of research centers at the University of Mosul, in addition to a select group of researchers and engineers from the Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research , lending the event a distinctive scientific and applied character.
The outcomes of the workshop are directly aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals that the University of Mosul seeks to embed within its research and scientific programs, particularly:
-
Goal 1 (No Poverty) through improving agricultural land productivity and increasing farmers’ incomes.
-
Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) by enhancing food security through sustainable agricultural practices.
-
Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by reducing the use of harmful chemicals and improving food quality.
-
Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through sound soil management and reducing water resource pollution.
-
Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by supporting the agricultural sector and providing sustainable employment opportunities.
-
Goal 13 (Climate Action) by reducing carbon emissions and enhancing soil resilience to climate change.
-
Goal 15 (Life on Land) by preserving soil biodiversity and associated ecosystems.
This workshop comes as part of the University of Mosul’s commitment to its leading role in serving the community and promoting sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of applied scientific research in addressing current environmental and agricultural challenges, and contributing to the protection of food and environmental security in the region.
