Vision, Mission and Goals
The C.AFCAR VISION:
The Center for Arid Farming and Conservation Agriculture Research’s at the University of Mosul will be the basic pillar of sustainable agricultural development in Iraq.
The C.AFCAR MISSION:
Contributing to community service through diagnosing and addressing the current human, economic and environmental problems of the agricultural sector, and leadership in planning and implementing promising sustainable development projects in the governorate and all of Iraq.
The C.AFCAR GOALS:
First: The center will achieve the three pillars of human, economic and environmental sustainable development in dry areas through its active role in diagnosing obstacles, coexistence with climate change, and developing solutions with field application to achieve the university’s goal of serving society.
Second: The actual application of conservation agriculture (no-tillage) technology, which is ideal for confronting climate change and rain scarcity, which contributes to maximizing resources for farmers, limits rural-urban migration, and achieves the goals of the United Nations in combating poverty and hunger.
Third: The center seeks to be the leading institution for agricultural development in the governorate through its field activities, cooperation with international organizations and relevant universities, and creating opportunities for Iraqi researchers to interact with foreign researchers to exchange experiences.
Fourth: Implementing the studies of the project to reconstruct the pasture area in Nineveh Governorate, which has an area of approximately one million hectares, by initiating the research and testing activity of a new rainwater harvesting system, the Vallerani System (rain harvesting in small ponds), in an effort to achieve sustainable development in this vast area in all aspects (soil, pastoralism, environment, tourism, manufacturing, and urbanism).
Fifth: Studies of groundwater management and treatment and the optimal and regulated use of water resources.
Sixth: Implementing the Flora of Nineveh Governorate project, which will diagnose all species of the plant kingdom that will be collected and classified in the plant herbarium as dried plant samples, in addition to the activity of the gene bank, which will perpetuate the seeds of all plant families in Nineveh governorate.
Seventh: Studying the application of a new system of sustainable agriculture in the saline lands of central and southern Iraq, without Reclamation or Drainage Processes.
Eighth: The center’s work strategy specializes in managing rainwater and groundwater, regardless of the Tigris and Euphrates imports.
