Computer and Network Maintenance Division

Computer and Network Maintenance Division is one of the multifunctional sections within the Electronic Computing Center. This division is responsible for managing, distributing, and maintaining the internet network at the University of Mosul. It also provides maintenance services for computers and main and subsidiary switches located in the various departments and corridors of the university buildings. Additionally, the division installs and operates terminal devices connected to the university’s internet network. The division comprises several departments as follows:

Network Maintenance Division

This section is considered a fundamental pillar of the division due to its important and effective role. Since its establishment, it has provided internet services to the colleges and centers of the University of Mosul, initially through a wireless network. Its role became more prominent after the significant upgrade to the university’s internet network in 2006, marked by the adoption of fiber optic technology for network connectivity between the university’s colleges and departments. This introduced new tasks, including designing and implementing network infrastructure, ushering in a new era of applications and electronic services, and providing multiple services to over 7,000 users, including faculty members, staff, postgraduate students, as well as student halls and laboratories across most university colleges.

Between 2014 and 2017, due to the general circumstances in Mosul city and particularly at the university, the network infrastructure suffered destruction and vandalism. After the liberation battles in 2017, the Network Maintenance Division, with the assistance of other sections, undertook rehabilitation of the computers, main and subsidiary switches, and surviving network switches, preparing them for reintegration into the network. They also established an alternative wireless network to provide internet services to over 100 sites and gradually began reconnecting the fiber optic network in cooperation with the university’s Communications Section.

Computer Maintenance Division

The Computer Maintenance division is one of the oldest divisions in the Computing and Internet Center, having been active since the center’s early days. It performed routine maintenance of the mainframe computer and terminal stations distributed across ten annexes in different locations within the University of Mosul, in addition to maintaining the card punching machines.

Since then, the maintenance section has been one of the prominent and essential sections for sustaining continuous operations. Following the events that impacted the city, the Computer Maintenance Division played a vital role from the first day back in operation by recovering computers and devices from the rubble of the Electronic Computing Center building, which was burned during military operations. The persistent and diligent efforts resulted in the extraction of a large number of devices, which were sorted, inspected, cleaned, and repaired, then supplied back to the university.

Moreover, the section equipped the Computer Proficiency Exam Laboratory and other laboratories at the Electronic Computing Center with the necessary computers used for computer proficiency courses.
