Master’s Thesis in the College of Education for Pure Science, Department of Biology…

In fulfillment of the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (quality education), a master’s thesis entitled “Pollution by Various Plastic Granules and Their Impact on Soil and Basil (Ocimum basilicum)” was discussed in the College of Education for Pure Science at the University of Mosul on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Part of the thesis defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Jassim Fatehi Ali; the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Younis Saadi Saeed; the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Azzam Salahuddin Younis; and a number of the department faculty members.
The study, presented by the student Rabah Hasan Ali Al-Luhaibi from the Department of Biology, examined the effects of five different types of plastic granules—polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and carbon polycarbonate (PC)—at concentrations of 50 and 100 g/5 kg of soil for each type on soil properties, a number of physiological processes, growth, and the chemical composition of basil (Ocimum basilicum). The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Yousef Jabbar Ismail, with Assistant Professor Dr. Shaymaa Fateh Ali Darwish and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdul-Ilah Muhammad as members, and Professor Dr. Hussein Saber Muhammad Al-Rashidi as both member and supervisor.
