(Jalal Khaled) … the First Iraqi Novel

In 1928, the Iraqi cultural milieu witnessed the birth of a new age of the Iraqi narrative project when releasing (Jalal Khaled) which was the first Iraqi novel and the first work of the Iraqi writer and journalist Mahmood Ahmad Al-Sayyed. It was generously republished by Dar Sutoor (Baghdad: 2017) to introduce the contemporary Iraqi readers to this early Iraqi work since they have never been initiated into it before by the cultural establishments. The novel gives the reader a perspective on the atmosphere of the community environment in Iraq at the time of writing the novel, by providing models of peace and coexistence among the diverse ethnic, religious and intellectual components of the Iraqi social fabric. It also gives a glimpse of those who had called for social reform in respect of some of social negatives that are naturally found in any human society. The style of the novel is smooth and interesting, with some directness that often occurs in many first works of literature.Dr. Ahmad MuyassarCentral LibraryUniversity of Mosul#Share_your_Readings
