First Historical Book on Iraqi Press

(The Iraqi Journalism History) is a book written by the well-known Iraqi historian Abdulrazzaq Al-Hasani and published by Al-Garie Publishing House (Najaf: 1935). It is the first historical book on the Iraqi press, which represents a detailed reference that documents the publishing of the first newspaper Al-Zawraa on June 15, 1869 at the time of the Ottoman governor of Baghdad Medhat Pasha, and all the Iraqi newspapers, journals and other releases issued until the end of 1933. It consists of two parts, but unfortunately there is no trace of its second part. Its first part has a preface by the Lebanese polymath Philippe de Tarrazi, the first who wrote about the Arab journalism history, commending the book and its author with some notices that do not minimize the value of the book. The introduction of the book briefly mentions the early stages of press in Iraq and the difficulties the author faced to have his book published. The book contains five sections, each of which is about a historical stage of Iraqi journalism: magazines issued before World War l, magazines issued after the war till the end of 1933, political and literary newspapers issued before the war, political newspapers issued in Basrah after the British occupation and literary newspapers after the war, respectively.I think that a book with this historical importance is worth reading.Yusuf Hamed Sultan Department of Anesthesia TechniquesAl-Noor University College#Share_your_Readings
