The Library’s Second Virtual Course about The Dewey Decimal Classification

Under the auspices of Rector Kossay Al-Ahmady and the supervision of the Secretary-General of the University Libraries Mr. Sayf Al-Ashqar, a second virtual course entitled (Dewey Decimal Classification) was held by the Central Library of the University of Mosul on the 21st and 22nd of October 2020, within the Library’s continuing educational courses. The course was given by Ms. Rawa Salahuddin, assistant lecturer at the Central Library. It was of great importance for the participants, since the Dewey Decimal Classification is one of the world most prominent and widespread classification system first developed by the American scientist Melville Dewey. Many editions of the classification have been issued, especially the 23rd edition of 2011 adopted by the Central Library and its Branches, except the library of the College of Medicine that adopts the Library of Congress Classification. The course was held on two consecutive days. On the first day, DDC was defined and the system’s functions, objectives, characteristics, rules, and scientific steps were explained. On the second day, the course continued to provide the participants with an explanation about building and installation numbers in the Dewey Decimal Classification System, through notes in main tables and by using the auxiliary tables in addition to mentioning general notes about the use of these auxiliary tables. The course was a great success on the Google Meet Platform as a result of the efforts and electronic and administrative assistance of the Library’s lecturers Dr. Ghada Abdulkarim and Ms. Zina Tarek
