The Central Library at the University of Mosul Holds a Training Course on Managing and Organizing Library Collections Using the Dewey Decimal Classification System

In line with the directives of the President of the University of Mosul, the Honorable Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, emphasizing the importance of continuously developing the skills of scientific and technical staff as a key pillar of cognitive advancement, and in accordance with the university’s vision of strengthening and fostering cooperation and integration with state institutions, the Central Library, as part of the activities of the Continuing Education Division, held a training course entitled:

“Managing and Organizing Library Collections Using the Dewey Decimal Classification System”

This course was designed to train the staff of the Library of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals – Iraqi Geological Survey, and was conducted from 21 to 25 September 2025, under the supervision of the Director of the Libraries at the University of Mosul, Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Jassim Mohammed.

The course lectures were delivered by:

Assistant Lecturer Shatha Ahmed Dhnoun Al-HamdaniThe course was presented and coordinated by Ms. Saba Maad Al-Jubouri, Head of the Continuing Education Division at the Library.

The training covered a number of key topics, including:

An introduction to the Dewey Decimal Classification System

General characteristics of the system

Fundamental rules of classification

Practical steps for classification

Constructing and assigning classification numbers within the system

Utilizing notes found in the main tables

Hands-on applications for classifying library materials

At the end of the course, participants were awarded certificates of completion, in an atmosphere marked by positive engagement and strong interest.
