Regional Studies Center Holds a Seminar on Libya and Contemporary Water Issues
Regional Studies Center held a seminar by Dr. Rayan Thanoun Al-Abbasi for his research entitled “Libya and Contemporary Water Issues: The Euphrates River as a Case Study” in the presence of the Center’s researchers, on January 12, 2022.Al-Abbasi said that the research aims to present a new study related to Libya’s role in defending Arab water rights and to clarify its united positions in the era of the monarchy and republican regimes regarding the water problem about the Euphrates River between Iraq and Syria on the one hand, and Turkey on the other hand.The researcher added that he divided his research into five sections; The first one included “Libya’s position on the Israeli ambitions in Arab waters”. The second section covered “Libya and its relations with Iraq and Turkey. “The third one focused on “Libya and the Euphrates River affair ” and on Libya’s stances during its royal and republican eras towards the matters of the Iraqi-Syrian dispute with Turkey over the river’s waters. The fourth section reviewed “Muammar Gaddafi’s attitude on the Euphrates River question between Iraq, Syria, and Turkey”. The fifth and final one dealt with “Libya’s accession to the International Watercourses Convention for purposes other than navigation”.
