Regional Studies Center Holds a Lecture Discusses the Reality of Tourism in Iraq and Prospects for Development

Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul organized an academic lecture titled “The Reality of Tourism in Iraq: Obstacles to Progress and Activation Mechanisms,” delivered by Prof. Dr. Mithaq Khairallah Jalloud on May 7, 2025.

The lecture aimed to shed light on the challenges facing Iraq’s tourism sector and propose practical solutions to enhance its role in economic and social development, building on the country’s historical, religious, and natural potential.

The lecture examined the current state of tourism in Iraq, highlighting key obstacles such as weak infrastructure, lack of international promotion, and administrative shortcomings. It also discussed mechanisms for advancing the sector through improving services, developing legislation, and enhancing public-private cooperation, emphasizing the importance of investing in archaeological and religious sites to attract tourists from around the world.

The lecture concluded with recommendations calling for a comprehensive national tourism strategy, focusing on workforce training and raising public awareness about the sector’s importance. Attendees noted the significance of such discussions in driving development and opening new horizons for Iraq’s economy, ensuring sustainability.
