Regional Studies Center Holds a Scientific Workshop on Cyber Blackmail

The Regional Studies Center/Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Presidency of the Mosul University/Studies and Planning Department/Sustainable Development Unit, , held a scientific workshop entitled “Electronic blackmail: Its Causes and Means of Prevention”, presented by lecturer Abdul Ghafoor Waadallah Al-Shamaa, on May 18, 2025.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the phenomenon of cyber blackmail, which has become an increasing threat to the security of individuals and societies, raise community awareness of its dangers, and identify legal and technical means to confront it.

The workshop reviewed the reasons behind the spread of this crime, including poor digital awareness, misuse of social media, and lack of family control. It also addressed the most important methods used by blackmailers to entrap their victims, especially young people, while providing real-life examples from the local reality.

The workshop focused on providing a number of preventive measures, such as promoting e-culture, using protection programs, and quickly reporting any cases of blackmail to the competent authorities. The role of the family, educational institutions and the media in raising community awareness was also emphasized.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants called for intensifying awareness campaigns and updating legal legislation to combat this type of crime, stressing the importance of cooperation between security, educational and media authorities to curb this phenomenon.
