Regional Studies Center Explores the Phenomenon of Suicide in Academic Lecture

The Continuing Education Unit and the Human Rights Unit at the Regional Studies Center, in cooperation with the Human Rights Division at the Presidency of the University of Mosul, organized a lecture titled “The Phenomenon of Suicide in Iraq: Causes and Remedies”, delivered by Prof. Dr. Mohammed A. Younis, with the participation of a number of researchers and academics, on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
The lecture aimed to analyze the phenomenon of suicide from an academic perspective and to shed light on the economic, social, and psychological factors contributing to its rise. It also discussed scientific, humanitarian, and practical approaches to addressing the issue in line with human values, social traditions, and community well-being.
The lecture covered the main causes leading to suicide in Iraq, and examined the role of educational, media, and religious institutions in curbing the phenomenon. It further proposed national strategies for awareness and psychological and social support, emphasizing the importance of strengthening family and community dialogue to protect the most vulnerable groups.
In conclusion, participants underscored the need for joint efforts among universities, government bodies, and civil society organizations to mitigate this issue. They also highlighted that addressing suicide requires a comprehensive and sustainable development vision, encompassing several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — namely:
Good Health and Well-being (Goal 3), Quality Education (Goal 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8), Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10), and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal 16).
