Regional Studies Center Holds a Scientific Workshop on Electronic Addiction and Supporting Prevention within Framework of Sustainable Development

Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul / Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Presidency of the University of Mosul / Studies and Planning Division / Sustainable Development Unit, held a scientific workshop on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, titled: “Electronic Addiction: Its Causes and Methods of Prevention.”
The workshop was presented by Lecturer Abdul-Ghafour Waadallah Al-Shamaa, with the attendance of a number of academics, staff, and postgraduate students.
The workshop aimed to raise participants’ awareness about the dangers of electronic addiction, clarify its health and social impacts, and present preventive methods that contribute to curbing its spread. This reinforces the university’s role in achieving relevant Sustainable Development Goals related to health, education, and community well-being.
The workshop’s topics addressed the most prominent causes of electronic addiction, including the excessive use of smartphones, electronic games, and social media applications, and their resulting effects such as poor academic achievement, reduced social interaction, and declining mental health. The workshop also included a presentation of a set of preventive solutions, among them time management, the role of the family in positive supervision, developing stress management skills, and encouraging alternative activities.
Furthermore, the workshop linked the topic of electronic addiction to a number of Sustainable Development Goals, namely:
- Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being)
- Goal 4 (Quality Education)
- Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities)
- Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)
- Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)
The workshop concluded with recommendations emphasizing the necessity of enhancing community awareness of the rational use of technology and adopting ongoing preventive programs to reduce electronic addiction, in support of a safe and sustainable educational environment.
