Regional Studies Center Holds a Seminar on Crimes of Ba’ath Party and Genocide

As part of efforts to document national memory and understand the roots of political violence in the region, Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul, in coordination with the Media and Government Communication Department, held a seminar titled “The Crimes of the Ba’ath Party and Genocide: A Reading of Regional Contexts and their Repercussions on Societal Security” on Thursday, December 4, 2025.
The seminar discussed the policies of the former regime within their regional and international contexts, with the center utilizing regional dimensions to understand these crimes within their political and security frameworks. The session included presentations of various perspectives that addressed: regional comparisons of similar crimes committed by authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, the role of academic institutions in preserving national memory and promoting a culture of transitional justice, as well as mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of violations in post-conflict societies.
This activity falls within the framework of supporting analytical studies on regional political violence and enhancing societal awareness of the dangers of authoritarianism and the necessity of building sound governance systems.
At the conclusion of the seminar, researchers recommended the necessity of supporting specialized academic research, developing documentation methodologies, and fostering cooperation between national and regional institutions in the field of transitional justice.
