Regional Studies Center Holds Seminar on Briefing by UN Secretary-General’s Representative in Iraq

Regional Studies Center at the University of Mosul organized a scientific seminar on Thursday, December 4, 2025. The event featured a lecture by Prof. Dr. Imad Kh. Ibrahim, which addressed the latest briefing presented by Mohammed Al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq and Head of UNAMI, to the Security Council ahead of the mission’s mandate expiration on December 31, 2025. The session aimed to analyze the key points of the briefing and evaluate the next phase of Iraq’s relationship with the United Nations.
During the presentation, participants emphasized that the departure of the UN mission does not signify the end of the partnership with Iraq, but rather the beginning of a new phase in which the country reinforces its leadership over its own political and developmental path. The discussion also covered Al-Hassan’s remarks on Iraq’s peace and security trajectory, achieved after many years of challenges with broad international support, and highlighted his commendation of the recent electoral process and the rise in voter turnout to 56%, stressing the importance of forming the new government without delay.
The seminar concluded by affirming that the United Nations will continue to support Iraq through technical expertise and developmental programs, alongside encouraging the enhancement of relations with Kuwait and the practical and effective resolution of outstanding issues related to missing persons and border demarcation.
