Regional Studies Center/Continuing Education Unit and the Women’s Affairs Committee, in collaboration with the Studies and Planning Department/Sustainable Development Unit and the Women’s Affairs Unit at the University of Mosul, and in implementation of the Third National Plan for Women, Security and Peace (Cultural Awareness) for 2025, held a seminar entitled “Violence against women in Iraq… A review of national legislation and laws” on Sunday, December 14, 2025. The session began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah for the late Prof. Qasim Mohsen Al-Habiti, former director of Regional Studies Center.
The seminar aimed to shed light on the reality of violence against women in Iraq and to analyze the legislative and legal framework governing the protection of women, while enhancing societal and institutional awareness of the importance of aligning national laws with relevant international human rights standards.
The seminar was delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Batool Halil Jubair, who reviewed the various forms of violence directed against women, the reasons for their persistence, and the effectiveness of current legislation in curbing such violence. She also highlighted existing legal gaps and implementation challenges, emphasizing the role of universities and research centers in supporting public policies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal (4) Quality Education, Goal (5) Gender Equality, Goal (10) Reduced Inequalities, Goal (16) Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Goal (17) Partnerships for the Goals.
The seminar concluded by stressing the need for integrated academic, legislative, and societal efforts to strengthen the protection of women and to build a culture that rejects violence, thereby contributing to the achievement of peace, security, and sustainable development in Iraq.
