Regional Studies Center Discusses Developmental and Regional Dimensions of Adopting Solar Energy to Support Energy Security

Regional Studies Center / Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Presidency of the University of Mosul / Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit, organized a scientific seminar entitled “Solar Energy as a Strategic Option for Enhancing Energy Security and Achieving Sustainable Development”. The seminar was delivered by Prof. Dr. Luqman Omar Al-Nuaimi on Sunday, 28 December 2025, with the participation of a distinguished group of faculty members, researchers, and specialists interested in energy issues, development policies, and sustainability.
The seminar aimed to examine the strategic role of solar energy in reducing reliance on the conventional electrical power system, while highlighting its economic, environmental, and social implications, particularly in light of the challenges facing the energy sector at both national and regional levels. It also underscored the importance of renewable energy as a key pathway to strengthening energy security and supporting development stability.
The seminar covered several scientific themes, including the mechanisms for installing and operating solar panels, their economic feasibility in the medium and long term, and their role in supporting public policies related to energy and sustainable development. It also addressed the contribution of solar energy to achieving a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), most notably:
- Affordable and Clean Energy (Goal 7)
- Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8)
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (Goal 9)
- Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11)
- Climate Action (Goal 13)
In concluding the seminar, participants emphasized the need to strengthen integration between academic research and public policymaking, expand institutional partnerships, and intensify research and awareness activities that contribute to accelerating the transition toward renewable energy. Such efforts, they noted, would reinforce sustainable development pathways and serve the local community within a development vision with a regional dimension.
