Regional Studies Center Holds a Seminar on Renaissance Dam and Egyptian-Ethiopian Relations

The Regional Studies Center held a seminar for the research entitled “The issue of the Renaissance Dam and its impact on Egyptian-Ethiopian relations”, by Assistant Lecturer Manjid Mohammad Fawzi on October 13, 2024.

The seminar aimed to identify the Renaissance Dam project and the development and energy projects associated with it, and to identify the reasons that were behind the support and external financing of the Renaissance Dam project, represented by Chinese funding, US support, and investment, as well as the support provided by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and Western companies, in addition to the “Israeli” support, and Gulf support for projects related to the Renaissance Dam. In addition to reviewing the impact of the Renaissance Dam project on the water security of the Nile Basin countries in general and Egypt in particular; tracking Egypt’s position on the Renaissance Dam project and the most prominent Egyptian reactions to Ethiopia and the Renaissance Dam project, and clarifying the reasons for Egypt’s rejection of the Renaissance Dam project and its impact on the shape and nature of Egyptian-Ethiopian relations.

The seminar addressed three main topics: The first discussed the location of the Renaissance Dam and the amount of water stored in it, the mechanism and method of financing the dam, as well as the management of the Nile River Basin water in international law, and how to utilize them and the share of each country before the start of the Renaissance Dam project, while the second studied the impact of the Renaissance Dam project on the water security of the Nile Basin countries and the position of these countries on it. The third section examined the reality of Egyptian-Ethiopian relations, common interests, and the impact of the Renaissance Dam on Egyptian-Ethiopian relations in the economic and political fields.
